Mos Def arrested in SA for immigration issues

CAPE TOWN – American rapper and actor Mos Def has appeared in court for allegedly contravening the country’s immigration laws.

The rapper, whose birth name is Dante Smith, is known in the music industry as Mos Def, and now goes by the name Yasiin Bey, was arrested at Cape Town International Airport yesterday.

The artist has been living in Cape Town for a few years.

The police’s Noloyiso Rwexana said,

“I can confirm that a 42-year-old man was arrested yesterday and is expected to appear in the Bellville magistrates court today on Immigration Act related charges.”

Department of home affairs spokesperson Mayihlome Tshwete has confirmed that the rapper has been “charged with usage of fraudulent travel documents [and that] the matter is currently before the courts.”
